Five prompt patterns every team should know

After working with hundreds of teams, we've identified five prompt patterns that consistently deliver high-quality results.
1. Role + context + task
You are a senior product manager. Context: [background]. Task: [specific ask]. Format: [bullets/table/prose].
2. Critique and improve
Ask the model to review its own output against explicit criteria before presenting a final answer.
3. Step-by-step reasoning
For complex problems, request numbered steps and intermediate conclusions. This improves accuracy and makes outputs auditable.
4. Few-shot examples
Provide 2–3 examples of desired input/output pairs. This is especially effective for formatting and tone.
5. Constrained creativity
Set boundaries: word count, audience, tone, and must-include points. Constraints often improve rather than limit quality.
